But it can be hard to physically drink this much if you’re not used to it. The body’s thirst mechanism seems to shut down very quickly if it’s not being supplied with enough water. So even though we may be very dehydrated indeed, our body may not be telling us this, and we may feel fine and not at all thirsty. So the trick is to reawaken the thirst reflex by finding an easy way to increase our water intake. The following method was passed on to me many years ago by another therapist and has worked a treat for me and many of my clients. All you do is fill a glass with a splash of orange or other fruit juice (not squash), top up with water and drink. You really do only need a ‘splash’ of juice, just enough so that you can just about taste it. I don’t know why this method works so well, but you will quickly find that it starts to reawaken your thirst reflex and you will actually physically want to drink more water, even crave it. In fact, this method is so effective that I suggest just starting off with one glass of juice/water a day and working up slowly, until every glass of water you drink has some fruit juice with it. The cells need time to adjust to a new level of water intake so treat them kindly! And don’t worry if you pee a lot more - this should settle down once your body has got used to its new regime. Once you’re drinking around two litres a day, or whatever feels normal for you under this regime, you can stop adding the juice to your water. |
