reflexology

Good for: stress, insomnia, back pain, sciatica, frozen shoulder, gynaecological problems, pregnancy, digestive disorders.

what is it?

Reflexology works through the application of pressure to reflex points on the feet. Deeply calming and revitalising, reflexology can help alleviate stress and a wide variety of health problems. It stimulates and balances the hormonal, digestive, circulatory, lymphatic, immune and nervous systems. It promotes the elimination of toxins and relaxes mind and body, facilitating healing and repair on all levels.

"Reflex" points on the feet relate to all the different parts of the body. For instance, the toes relate to the head and neck, whilst the digestive reflexes are located on the soles of the feet. The right foot is a reflection of the right side of the body and the left foot a reflection of the left side.

how does it work?

Actually, no one knows exactly why reflexology is so effective, but there are a few theories. One is that it works through the nerve pathways, the feet having an especially rich supply of nerve endings. The other is that it works in a similar way to acupuncture, along the energetic pathways of the body. It is probable that both play a part.

what happens during a session?

After the case history, you will be asked to remove your foot wear and then lie on the treatment couch. The treatment starts with a relaxing foot massage, whilst the actual reflexology consists of precise and systematic massage of all the reflexes on the feet in turn. The pressure varies depending upon the needs of the person receiving treatment. People with ticklish feet are often surprised to find that they can enjoy reflexology because of the nature of the technique used.

Tender reflexes, or reflexes with a particular texture to them which can be detected by the trained hands of a reflexologist, may indicate an imbalance in the corresponding part of the body. Even very slight imbalances often show up, so be reassured that signs of imbalance on the feet shouldn’t be seen as something to worry about! As the feet are worked on in subsequent sessions, the body is brought back into balance and the tenderness should disappear. The primary sensation during treatment tends to be one of profound relaxation. Falling asleep is not uncommon!

A Brief History of Reflexology

Evidence suggests that the concept of treating the feet to improve health was clearly understood in several ancient cultures. The Chinese have a long tradition of working on the feet, and the acupuncture points on the feet and hands are regarded as amongst the most powerful in the whole body. It appears that a form of reflexology was used by Cherokee Native Americans, whilst we have a papyrus from Ancient Egypt that shows two people having their feet massaged with the caption ‘Please don’t hurt me!'

However, reflexology as we know it today was discovered and developed in America in the early twentieth century by Dr William Fitzgerald who found that applying pressure through rubber bands on the fingers could anaesthetise other parts of the body. His work was developed by physiotherapist Eunice Ingham and introduced into this country in the 1960s.

your session

The first appointment lasts between 75 and 90 minutes. Subsequent appointments last for either 60 or 75 minutes depending on your needs and preference.

Cost of sessions:
First session
(lasts up to 1.5hrs)

£50.00

Subsequent sessions
60 minutes - £45.00
75 minutes - £52.00

Your session can also be combined with Massage or The BioEnergiser.

how often?
You may just want an occasional treatment to give yourself some pampering and relaxation. Likewise, if you are already in good health, then regular sessions at, say, weekly or sometimes fortnightly intervals can help you to maintain your health and vitality.

If however, you want to work on long term stress or a particular health problem, you will need to have regular treatments over a period of time. These usually need to take place at weekly or fortnightly intervals.
