immune power

In Chinese medicine, the Spring and Autumn Equinoxes (March 21st and September 21st) are the times of the year when we are most likely to catch cold because our energy is changing ‘direction’.

During the Spring Equinox, our energy starts to expand in readiness for the warmer weather of the spring and summer. In the autumn, it moves into contraction to prepare for autumn and winter. These changes make us extra vulnerable to colds and flu. And of course, we are more likely to catch a cold throughout the winter anyway, so we also need extra help then.

So what can we do to strengthen our immune system so that we can fight off those pesky bacteria and viruses which threaten to lay us low?

Well, Ella Owen, a nutritional therapist and kinesiologist I know, recommends two supplements. The first is Olive Leaf extract, a powerful immune enhancer, which appears to work on viruses, bacteria and fungi, as well as increasing energy levels in some people. At Ella’s suggestion, I started taking it last year to deal with some post-viral fatigue I was experiencing. Within a couple of days I experienced a significant and sustained upturn in my energy levels. Nowadays I take it, in combination with Citricidal, another potent microbe fighter, whenever I feel a sore throat or cold coming on. So far no bacteria or virus has been able to withstand the onslaught.

Ella also recommends a good quality probiotic supplement to feed the good bacteria in the intestines. It is becoming more and more clear that our digestive system is a major part of our immune system and that therefore these bacteria form our first line of defence against invaders. So the more good bacteria we have, the more likely we are to be able to resist cold and flu bugs. The quality, and therefore the effectiveness of, probiotic formulas varies enormously, so it pays to go for a brand with a good reputation. You can’t go far wrong with the company Biocare for any supplement, so Ella suggests stocking up on one of their formulas.
